STUDENT NURSES’ ASSOCIATION BY-LAWS

 

ARTICLE I: NAME

 

The name of this organization will be the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Student Nurses’ Association.

 

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE

 

The purpose of this nonprofit association will be the following:

 

Section 1:

Aid in the development of the student nurse as a democratic citizen by broadening the member’s horizon as a member of a group.

Section 2:

Provide a closer bond and more unified spirit among student nurses, and promote professional and social unity within the program.

Section 3:

Encourage the student nurse to promote and maintain high educational and professional standards.

Section 4:

Stimulate an understanding and interest in programs of professional organizations.

Section 5:

Participate as an active constituent of the SNA and maintain interest in the state and national associations.

 

ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP

 

Section 1:

Students enrolled in the KVCC nursing program will be eligible and encouraged to become members.

Section 2:

Dues for membership will be determined annually.

Section 3:

Each new member will be required to fill out a membership form.

Section 4:

Each new member will be issued a membership card.

Section 5:

A student must become a member of the KVCC SNA during the first 8 weeks of level I or level II of the nursing program in order to be eligible for any SNA scholarship monies.

 

ARTICLE IV: OFFICERS AND THEIR DUTIES

 

Section 1:

The officers of this association will consist of 2 co-presidents, 2 co-vice presidents, 2 co-secretaries and 2 co-treasurers.

Section 2:

At least one officer from each position must be present at each scheduled meeting and function.  Each officer must attend at least 50% of the general and officer meetings per semester.  Each officer is responsible for coordinating attendance with their co-officers.

Section 3:

Officers will be elected at the first meeting of each new semester, and will serve one year.  Officers may choose to seek re-election.  An emergency vote may be enacted at any time during the semester, if deemed necessary.

Section 4:

Officers will deliver all records, papers, or other property belonging to the association to their successors or advisor at the time of resignation or upon graduation.  If stepping down from an officer position, a letter of resignation must be filed with the association.

Section 5:

Duties of the officers:

 

A.

The president will be responsible for the following:

 

 

1.

Preside at all meetings of this association and of the executive board.

 

 

2.

Serve as an ex-officio member of all committees.

 

 

3.

Approve expenditures as submitted by the treasurer and authorized by the executive board.

 

 

4.

Orient the co-president to the president’s duties.

 

 

5.

Secure speakers for the monthly meetings.

 

 

6.

Perform all other duties pertaining to the office.

 

 

7.

Provide the agenda for upcoming meetings to the advisor for review and distribution, no later than 2 weeks before the meeting.

 

B.

The vice president will be responsible for the following:

 

 

1.

Assume the duties of the president in the absence of that officer.

 

 

2.

Oversee all fund-raising activities of the association.

 

 

3.

Orient the co-vice president to the vice president’s duties.

 

 

4.

Meet with the advisor after the monthly meeting.

 

C.

The secretary will be responsible for the following:

 

 

1.

Record the minutes of all meetings of this association and of the executive board, and distribute the minutes to the members within one week of the meeting.

 

 

2.

Keep a permanent record on file of all reports, papers, and documents of this association.

 

 

3.

Keep on file an accurate list of the names and addresses of all members.

 

 

4.

Publish a monthly calendar of events.

 

 

5.

Conduct the general correspondence of the association and keep records of all the association correspondence.

 

 

6.

Orient the co-secretary to the secretary’s duties.

 

D.

The treasurer will be responsible for the following:

 

 

1.

Keep a permanent record of all dues paid.

 

 

2.

Deposit association funds promptly in the KVCC SNA account.

 

 

3.

Make monetary disbursements as approved and authorized by the executive board.

 

 

4.

Meet with the advisor prior to the monthly meetings to determine account balance, deposits, and expenditures.

 

 

5.

Report on the account balance and any pertinent deposits and expenditures at each association meeting.

 

 

6.

Orient the co-treasure to the treasurer’s duties.

 

ARTICLE V: VOTING

 

Section 1:

The voting body at all meetings of this association will consist of all members in good standing who are in attendance.

Section 2:

Before an election, members will be nominated or volunteer for an office, and only these members will be eligible for election.

 

ARTICLE VI: ASSOCIATION ADVISOR

 

 

Section 1:

The chapter advisor(s) of this association will be a member of the nursing program faculty or staff.  The chapter advisor is a volunteer, acting on behalf of the students, the college, and the state and national student nurses’ associations.  The advisor reports on activities to the college administrator in charge and the director of the nursing program.  The advisor is often a contact for community service needs on and off-campus.  The advisor is an essential link in communications among the student officers, the college administration, the faculty, and the greater Kalamazoo community.

 

Section 2:

Specifically, the advisor is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the association and will have the following responsibilities:

 

A.

Counsel and advise the officers and members of the association, as the need arises.

 

B.

Serve as the emergency contact person for all association functions.

 

C.

Attend meetings and activities, as available.

 

D.

Assist with orientation and installation of officers.

 

E.

Assist with planning the semester calendar.

 

F.

Process financial transactions of the association through appropriate college channels.

 

G.

Notify students of available scholarships.

 

H.

Supply forms and printed materials as needed by the association.

 

I.

Reserve meeting rooms and audio/visual equipment.

 

ARTICLE VII: PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY

 

These by-laws may be amended at any meeting, without previous notice, by a majority

vote of those members present.

 

By-laws approved and amended March 15, 2002 at the officer’s meeting and approved at the April 5, 2002 SNA general meeting.
